But not only that it can open us up. It can make our worlds bigger and brighter and clearer. It can *transform* us" -Mr. Gaydon”. ― Sarah Crossan, Apple.
Crossan's book is a eulogy on family, friendship and love, even though the family is not your cosily traditional one. Part of the appeal of the book, however, is Apple's character, because she simply is good-hearted and kind. But also Del and Rain are well-drawn and add a lot to the story. She stared like I was something strange and sad that she couldn't decipher. Then she sniffed, turned and left, banging the door behind her. Crossan (The Weight of Water) capably portrays Apple's mixed loyalties, the way writing poetry helps her admit her real feelings, and her burgeoning romance with a sweet and sensible classmate, Del. The ending, in which multiple dangers arise and are averted, is overly tidy, but readers, especially younger ones, will cheer for Apple and Rain.

Set in Brampton, England, Apple and Rain is a poignant story of family, loss, and redemption. It also shows, from Apple's point of view, what her world looks like, with school bullying, friendships tarnished, and finding new friends. Preview — Apple and Rain by Sarah Crossan.
